Description:  Foliose thallus, orbicular to irregular, small, very tightly adnate, gray or dark brown, sparse soredia,isdia absent.

Specimen #9 Calcareous Rimmed Lichen

Name: Aspicilia calcarea-Calcareous Rimmed Lichen
Family: Megasporceae  
Collection Date:  09/13/2011
Habitat: Found incrusted in rock on trail
Location: South Chagrin Reservation, Chagrin Ohio
Description:  Very white thallus, which usually looks like bird droppings. Circular pattern, black apothecia present. Photobiont is a unicellular green algae Trebrouxiod. Asci contain 4-8 spores. Usually found on rocky surfaces.

Habitat: On Red Maple tree bark found on trail
Location: South Chagrin Reservation, Chagrin Ohio
Description:  Crustose, continuous to dispersed, rimose or areolate, sometimes subsquamulous. Frequently present, usually dark rarely unpigmented, often forming only a thin black outline delimiting the thallus border. Apothecial, usually plane, black.

Description:  Thallus grayish white, often apothecia present on thallus, which is flattened.

Location: West Fork, Little Colorado River near Sheep’s Crossing
Description: Long established genus, characterized by a pale greenish to yellowish, pendulous to tufted, fruticose thallus, variously branched but usually with short fibrils perpendicular to the main trunk, sorediate or isidiate.

Family:  Teloschistaceae

Habitat: Found on overhanging rock bank by shoreline along Chagrin River on Squaw Rock Trail
Location: South Chagrin Reservation, Chagrin Ohio
Description: Thallus a diffuse, thick powdery crust. Pale to greenish with a white medulla. Granules commonly projecting cottony hyphae. On rocks, walls and tree-trunks.
